ing love affair and who for a long time diligently avoided films, plays and books which depicted idealized love relationships, having learned that these filled her with self-recriminations which she could not yet control. This does not constitute avoidance of reality or denial of a problem. It simply, but very importantly, provides pain-free time in which to gather strength for constructive purpose.

I remember a period of time during which I felt particularly vulnerable. I studiously avoided news programs that were especially full of horror then because tiiey demoralized me still further. Again, this is not sticking one's head in the sand ostrichlike. It is effecting a block to self-hate, and this or any other kind of block, especially of an early and even anticipatory nature, is a definite form of compassion and constructive caring for self.

It is also a block to self-hate to call a friend who has an uplifting effect on a drooping morale, or to seek distraction or help of any constructive kind, and generally to do for oneself whatever is possible to obliterate the self-hating dynamism as soon as even an inclination in its direction arises.

A patient of mine recently described going to Paris with her employer and his wife. All three are part of a clothing manufacturing concern, and they go to Paris periodically to look over styles and fashions. On the second night after their arrival, the three of them were to go to an elegant fashion party given by one of France's famous couturiers. Wlme dressing for the party, my patient suddenly found herself thinking about the fact that she wouldn't have her own escort that evening. She inamediately intervened before the self-hating process took hold. She knew from previous experience that this thought was designed to spoil her evening and that it contained the potential to destroy her entire stay in Paris. She had considerable previous experience with self-hate and fortunately also with involvement and enhancement of the compassionate way of life.
